Inspiration on Anilah’s compositions

“The music of Anilah is born from a practice that is deeply inspired by nature and a willingness to engage with the natural world within a framework of reciprocity. In this way, artistic expression becomes a symbiotic relationship with the elements. All of the music is composed in nature, while walking or in meditation. An unspoken conversation occurs which influences the composition, and by entering into this state, I find myself listening to melodic structures that are inherent within all of nature. There is a widening of the senses, and an unraveling of conceptual boundaries. My art and music are continuously influenced by these practices which cultivate benevolence, compassion, and gratitude.” (https://anilah.bandcamp.com/album/invoking-the-numinous)

Meet Anilah

Residing on the beautiful west coast of British Columbia, Anilah is the solo project of composer and vocalist Dréa Drury. For the first 18 years of her life, she lived in a rural village of 50 people in the heart of the Kootenay Mountains. Her experiences there, as well as her love for nature, wilderness, and the world of the elements, has inspired her to write music which directly reflects their influence.

Since the release of Anilah’s first EP “Warrior” in 2014, Dréa has been fascinated with the interplay between creative expression, psychoacoustic sound design, and the natural environment. Ethereal and evocative soundscapes create a stunning backdrop for her unique vocal style, which has been cultivated after two decades of studying both traditional folk-chant and classical North Indian Raga melodies under the late Ali Akbar Khan.

In 2015, Anilah collaborated with Einar Selvik (Wardruna, and History Channel Vikings composer) to create a remix of her title track “Warrior,” which is an epic blend of contemporary songwriting and traditional Norwegian folk instrumentation. Since this release, she has continued to experiment with an approach to writing music that revolves around the power of the voice and the use of minimalist composition.
